Eye Parts- Diseases

There are many diseases and abnormalities of the eye for which these have just touched the surface. We have listed for you some of the common diseases that we deal with here with the hopes that you will be able to recognize what you have been told and we will be able to help you better understand them:

Lid problems-entropion, ectropion, trichiasis, distichiasis, ectopic cilia, lid tumors, chalazions , styes, infections.

Corneal problems- ulcer, keratitis, pannus, pigment, keratoconjunctivitis sicca

Lens- cataract, nucleur sclerosis, luxation

Retina- infection, inflammation, chorioretinitis, optic neuritis, sard, pra.

Diseases- uveitis, glaucoma, retroorbital disease and tumors

The lens of the eye is what focuses the light on the retina, which is the seeing portion of the eye. When there is opacity of the lens we have a cataract. An ageing process of the lens is called nucleur sclerosis and it may appear gray in color when observed

Retina- this is one of the most important structures in the eye. It is what we see with in combination with the cornea and the lens. The retina contains the rods and cones, which are the so-called photoreceptors that pick up light and transmits it to the optic nerve and then on to the brain.

Vitreous- this is the material that fills the eye up and allows it to maintain its shape. The vitreous is formed before birth and is never replaced. Sometimes it degenerates with age or inflammation

Sclera - the white of the eye-it sits under the pink tissue called the conjunctiva. The sclera can become inflamed and when that occurs it is called a scleritis.

Conjunctiva - the tissue over the sclera; this is the so-called white of the eye but the reality is that it sits on top of the sclera. When it becomes inflamed it is called conjunctivitis.

Lids - these structures cover the eye and protect and lubricate the cornea (front of the eye). Lots of things can go wrong with the lids.If they turn in or out they are termed entropion or ectropion. If there are extra lashes lining the lid margin it is called distichiasis. If the lashes just roll in it is called trichiasis. The lid margin can be inflamed which is called blepharitis. There are glands that line the lid called meibonium glands. These can become plugged with infection or there can be tumors of these glands.

Lacrimal gland - This gland lies about 2 mm in from the lid margin and supplys the eyes with tears. If the gland stops working we end up with a dry eye called keratoconjunctivitis sicca.

Cornea - this is the front window of the eye;it is the clear portion that we see thru.
